Delta-8-THC and Delta-9-THC are chemically very similar. Both have almost the same structure and differ in only one small position (PMC10976172). Studies show that Delta-8 binds less strongly to the CB1 receptors in the brain than Delta-9 (Tagen & Klumpers, 2022, British Journal of Pharmacology 179(15):3915–3933). For this reason, researchers rate Delta-8 as less potent than Delta-9 (Kruger & Kruger, 2022).
| Delta-9-THC | Delta-8-THC | |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Double bond at carbon 9 | Double bond at carbon 8 |
| Potency | Reference (100%) | About 65–75% as strong (Kruger & Kruger, 2022; PMC10976172) |
| Reported risks | Nervousness or paranoia, especially at large doses | Similar risks; in surveys, users reported nervousness or paranoia less often (Kruger & Kruger, 2022) |
| Regulation in the EU (July 2026) | Strictly controlled in most countries. Germany has separate rules for adults under certain conditions. | The status is unclear and differs by country. Some countries have already banned Delta-8 (EUDA). |
| Price | Often more expensive, because it is more strictly regulated | Often cheaper |

Delta 8 vs. Delta 9: Comparing the Two Cannabinoids
Both substances bind to the same receptors in the body, such as CB1. The main difference that studies describe is the strength of the binding, which is lower for Delta-8.
- Same receptors (such as CB1)
- Almost the same chemical structure
- Same main breakdown product in the liver (THC-COOH)
- Different potency
The biggest difference is potency.
At larger doses, Delta-9 can cause adverse reactions such as nervousness or paranoia (Kruger & Kruger, 2022).
In surveys, Delta-8 users reported nervousness or paranoid thoughts less often than Delta-9 users (Kruger & Kruger, 2022). These are self-reports, not controlled studies.
Delta-8 is not risk-free. Authorities have received reports of adverse reactions after Delta-8 use, including:
- Hallucinations
- Tremors
- Vomiting
- Confusion
- Loss of consciousness
